NEW DELHI: At the fag end of the
foggiest winters
in years, Delhi Airport’s backbone CAT III B runway 28/10 is finally back in operation from Feb 3 after over a month’s delay. The runway’s re-carpeting had begun last September after G20 was over and it was expected to be back in business by late December. However, delays on several counts like stopping work when pollution spiked and electrical-lighting issues led to a delay in what was to be the foggiest winter in many years – leading to unprecedented flight delays and diversions at India’s busiest aviation hub that had a consequential impact across airlines’ networks.
“GMR-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) Feb 3 announced the completion of re-carpeting and refurbishment work of runway 10/28.
The runway has been handed over to Air Traffic Control (ATC) for commercial operations from Feb 03, 2024. DIAL had undertaken the much-needed re-carpeting work of the 3,813 metre long and 45 metre wide runway in the middle of September 2023, just after the conclusion of the historic G20 Summit,” DIAL said in a statement.
“Re-carpeting work of the runway was completed in December 2023, post which Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) operationalization was taken up. DIAL undertook the rehabilitation work of runway 10/28 for improved passenger experience including induction of few additional taxiways. With the completion of rehabilitation work, Delhi Airport would become future-ready for undertaking operations with its full capacity,” it added DIAL says IGIA terminals’ capacity will increase to 10 crore passengers annually (CPA) and the airside capacity will enhance to handle 14 CPA.
Delhi Airport has four runways and three terminals.
DIAL says it undertook re-carpeting works, which included milling of entire length of the runway and
overlaying it with Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB). Polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) is bitumen combined with one or more polymer materials which enhances the mechanical properties of the
bitumen material. PMB can withstand heavy-duty traffic and extreme weather conditions.
