LEE ANNE LINGO ran away with the women’s title and her husband Andrew Thornton reached the men’s final of the Duke’s Academy Tennis Tournament yesterday at the Guaracara Park Tennis Courts.
Lingo brushed aside two-time Tranquillity Open Over-35 champion Farrah Chautilal 6-3, 6-0 in yesterday’s final, after only allowing last year’s Chetwynd Club champ Savitree Singh one game in Friday’s semi-finals.
The former national and Tranquillity Open winner only returned to local competition after more than a decade in the Interclub League in January and then went on to beat last year’s “Duke’s” champ Cameron Wong in March to reach the semi-finals of Tranquil”.
After overwhelming Chetwynd B class champ Jayden Mitchell 6-1, 6-1 in Friday’s quarter-finals, Thornton advanced to today’s title match with a 7-6 (7/2), 6-0 triumph over Askia Richards, who had upset No 4 seed Dunstan De Noon 7-5, 6-3 to reach yesterday’s semis.
However, the second-seeded Barbadian Thornton is not expected to follow his wife into the winners’ enclosure as his opponent today is tournament owner and prohibitive title favourite Akiel Duke.
The top seed and defending champ usually has a very tough time with Keshan Moonasar, and he scored a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) triumph over the 2022 East Clubs Classified champ in yesterday’s semis.
Thornton stunned former national and Tranquillity champ Richard Chung to reach the East Classified final last year, but he then failed to make any impression against 2019 Tranquillity champ Duke.
The final is projected to take place at 10 a.m.
