On a rain-affected evening, Signal Hill United and Eagles walked away with convincing wins to set up an interesting battle on neutral grounds next Saturday in Pool One of the Tobago Ascension Big Eight League.
The youthful Eagles outfit was too fast, too organised and well-disciplined for the out of sorts Bethel United and came away 4-0 winners.
Zion Makoul and Kassidy Davidson twisted and turned the Bethel defence whichever way they chose and in minute eight, Davidson was the provider of a right-side cross for Ajani Grant to blast home the first goal of his double.
Three minutes later it was Davidson’s turn to lob the keeper after running on to a well-weighted pass from captain Kelsey Alleyne in goal. The teams retreated to the change rooms with the half-time score at 2-0. But fans didn’t have to wait long as Grant was on the scoresheet for his second item in minute 48th from a quick counter midway in the Eagles half of the field to make it 3-0.
Bethel were literally done and dusted thereafter, and Eagles toyed with them until Shaquille Smith scored a long range effort in the 68th minute to complete the victory.
In the second encounter, league favourites Sidey’s were quickly into their game. But the old adage of the race is not for the swiftest still has some meaning, as Signal Hill United came from a goal down to win 3-1. In the sixth minute, Kelson Charles showed his speed as he intercepted a loose pass to dribble one defender and delivered a cross ball for the speedy Pavel Warrick to use every inch of his frame to tap home. But that was all she wrote for Sidey’s, as injuries, cramps and poor finishing got the better of the Eastern Tigers as they crumbled.
Signal Hill levelled the score in the 15th minute through good team play, utilising five passes from back to front for Maurice Hackett to level the score. In the 36th minute, Kenverne Marcelle scored the goal of the evening when he picked up a poor clearance on the top of the 18-yard box, and with time and space, he calmly blasted his shot past a helpless Sidey’s goalkeeper. Fatigue was now very evident in the Tigers team, and in the 85th minute, some clumsy defending resulted in referee Yorke awarding a penalty which Miguel George scored to end Sidey’s miserable night.
