Abuja (Sundiata Post) – There is no doubt that the Easter celebration in Plateau State will be celebrated without the crisis of the usual Killings that always greets the State whenever there is religious festivities.
The peaceful celebration which is certain can be hinged on the fact that the Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Maj.-Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar, has deliberately ensured that the mechanism of peaceful coexistence has been adequately expended to ensure that the warm which always results to unrest is nipped to the bud.
“It was not an easy task, I have to be awake even at 2-3am every day to ensure that all distress calls are attended to”, Gen. Abubakar who also doubles as the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division Nigerian Army, said in one of his speech while addressing stakeholders.
It would be recalled that the 2023 Christmas celebration was greeted with what was described as a “Christmas Eve attack”, a scenario that led to several other reprisal and counter reprisal attacks stretching through the whole of January 2024.
But from all indications with the tireless efforts of the Commander, relative peace has returned to all the crises-ridden parts of the warring communities while they had since sheath their swords and embraced peace for the progress and development of their localities.
In the past couple of months, there is no reported cases of crisis in the once troubled Mangu, Barakin-Ladi, Riyom and Jos South local government areas of the State, while farmers who deserted their farms for fear of being attacked have since returned to their farms, in preparing for the rainy season.
Reports gathered indicated that both the natives and Fulani herdsmen, who were often at loggerheads, had embraced peace and agreed to live in peace with one another.
“This attributed the prevailing peace to the new approach which Gen. Abubakar adopted in taming the ugly incidents”, a community leader who spoke to our correspondent said.
According to him, on assumption of office, the Commander relocated to Mangu LGA, where he set up a Step-Up Command Operational Base, the first of its kind in the history of Operation Safe Haven.
“He embarked on dialogue with various warring communities in the troubled area. These communities were also effectively monitored by troops to ensure compliance of peace deals.
“This Commander is not willing to play politics with the lives of human beings, that was why peace initiatives were put in place. The operation embarked on a vigorous campaign against violence, set up a series of Stakeholders meetings, and promoted dialogue between the natives and various ethnic groups in the State. To the glory of God, there is relative peace on the Plateau today”, another Community leader who spoke with our correspondent said.
Our reporter added that the OPSH is not resting in ensuring that peace continues to reign, saying that troops on their part have continued to comb every troubled area of the State to ensure the sustenance of harmonious living.
