“EGAY’ has intensified into a severe tropical storm but it remains offshore while moving westward, the weather agency said on Sunday.
In its 11 a.m. bulletin, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that the severe tropical storm, which may further escalate into a typhoon within 24 hours, was estimated 610 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte.
Moving at 15 kilometers per hour (kph), Egay has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 115kph, weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said.
“It will remain offshore but a close approach or landfall within the vicinity of extreme Northern Luzon is not ruled out,” Villamil said.
“Egay, which may reach the super typhoon category by Tuesday, will be closest to extreme Northern Luzon on Wednesday and make landfall over the east coast of Taiwan on Thursday morning,” the Pagasa forecaster added.

The weather bureau said that the highest wind signal that may be hoisted will be Signal No. 3 or 4 in extreme Northern Luzon.
