SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at the new EU ban on the destruction of unsold clothing.
(1888PressRelease) July 07, 2023 – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS to help operators in the European Union (EU) understand the new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which includes a ban on the destruction of unsold clothing.
The fashion and textiles industry currently accounts for around a quarter of all EU greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Significant quantities of new and unused textile products are discarded every year, leading to concerns over waste and the unnecessary release of GHG and toxic chemicals into the environment. Adding to this problem is rapid growth in online sales, fast paced production and consumption cycles.
The European Commission has adopted the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation as part of its commitment to reducing waste and promoting reuse and recycling practices. Replacing the 2009 directive, this sets environmental sustainability requirements for nearly every good placed on the market in the EU. Products must be, “both energy and resource efficient,” and, “more durable, reliable, reusable, upgradable, reparable, recyclable and easier to maintain.” As part of the regulation, companies must find alternative ways of handling excess stock, such as donations, reselling and recycling.
SGS has published SafeGuardS 077.23 to provide stakeholders with a clear overview of the requirements in the regulation. It covers the implementation of digital product passports, rules for transparency and the ban. It also looks at the periods of transition, which depend on the size of business.
Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 077.23 to learn more.
