Arriving crews found a fire under a deck over the riverbank. The fire investigator and a fire bylaw inspector were called to the scene. The fire bylaw inspector attended to support anyone who may have been inadequately housed, but no one was found to be requiring assistance at the scene, according to the release.
The fire department confirmed the damage was limited to the deck over the river, since crews were able to access the private hydrant on-site to quickly extinguish the fire.
The cost of the damage is estimated at $10,000.
In June, a fire under the deck of the University Bridge shut down the more than century-old bridge to traffic for more than a day. The source was found to have been a fire in an abandoned encampment that spread to the underside of the deck and into wooden forms that had been used in a 1972 bridge repair.
Responders to the bridge fire found a household mattress that had ignited in an archway at one of the higher points under the bridge. The city says the blaze isn’t believed to have caused any long-term structural damage.
