Following Team India’s five wickets victory in the fourth Test, captain Rohit Sharma had said that players who have hunger for Test cricket would be considered, not those who don’t want to participate.
“Test cricket is the toughest format and if you want to achieve success in it, then you need that hunger. We will give chances to those who are hungry. The players who don’t have that hunger, we don’t want them. We come to know who wants to play Test cricket and who doesn’t,” said Rohit.
Meanwhile, legendry cricketer and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has thrown his weight behind Rohit in his brutal reminder to Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, who refused to play Ranji Trophy matches.
BCCI punished Iyer and Kishan as they were not offered central contracts for the new season.
“May be they have decided never to play Test cricket for India,” said Gavaskar by taking an indirect dig at Kishan and Iyer.
“Rohit is right. The ones who want to play Test cricket should be considered. I have been saying this for years. The players are recognized because of Indian cricket. They are getting money and fame because of Indian cricket. Show some loyalty towards Indian cricket,” the former India captain further said.
“And if you show tantrums, Rohit’s statement makes sense. We have seen many players pick and choose, which shouldn’t happen. May be the players skipping red-ball matches don’t have hunger for the format,” the Little Master added.
