Germany vs Scotland preview

It’s here. It’s finally here! Euro 2024 kicks off with a bang when Germany open their tournament against Steve Clarke’s Scotland.

The optimism surrounding the Germans was high coming into this but you just wonder how their stuttering performances in the warm-up games has affected that.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side – third favourites to win the competition with most bookmakers – were held 0-0 by Ukraine before a late Pascal Gross goal earned a 2-1 win over Greece, having fallen behind in the first half.

Toni Kroos’ decision to play one more tournament could be the key for them, while the speed and attacking quality in Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala will cause any team problems.

That includes Scotland. They’ve had a difficult build-up too with the injuries to Aaron Hickey, Lewis Ferguson, Nathan Patterson and then Lyndon Dykes, who was injured in one of the first Scotland training sessions.

Hickey, Ferguson and Dykes in particular will have been in and around the starting line-up for Steve Clarke and he’s been forced into trying to find the right balance in his team selection.

After a somewhat unconvincing 2-0 win over Gibraltar which ended a long losing run, the Scots threw away a 2-0 lead at Hampden to draw 2-2 with Finland. In part due to changes made by Clarke in giving his main men a rest before this.

Germany vs Scotland tips

Pump up the Jam

It’s not completely wrong to say Germany’s Euro 2024 hopes lie at the feet of a 21-year-old.

In Jamal Musiala, the Germans have a real gem and this could be the tournament that really kicks him on in his already top career.

The Bayern Munich kid battled with injury at the end of the season but those issues look to be beyond him after 150 minutes in the two warm-up games. Comes up against makeshift Scotland defence here.

Yellow warning

Scotland could well be playing without the ball for the majority of the tournament opener. They will be, in fact.

That brings its own pressures and for the midfield in particular, that’s a tough shift in there.

Prior to his injury in April, Scott McTominay picked up three yellow cards in six games and was also booked in the FA Cup final which was his last game. Decent value.

Keep it tight

Germany have struggled in the first half of their two warm-up games and the Scotland set-up has the capability of doing likewise.

This is a completely different test in the opening game of a home European Championships but that does bring its own pressures, too.

Scotland have enough to hold them to the break at least.
