A series of heartwarming photos showed Shakira’s parents William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado holding hands and smiling at a camera as they stood in front of the statue.

Shakira, 46, of Barranquilla, Colombia said: “It makes me happy to share this with my parents and especially with my mother on her birthday.”

She added that the dedication – which read: “A heart that composes, hips that do not lie, an unmatched talent, a voice that moves masses and bare feet that march for the good of childhood and humanity” – was “too much for my little heart”.

The world-famous singer-songwriter is best known for her song Hips Don’t Lie, which was released by Epic Records in 2006, as well as her hypnotising dance moves.

Márques portrayed Shakira barefoot with a raised right hip, her long hair flowing and arms interlocked above her head.

She wore a loose red and silver skirt paired with a red bikini top.

The singer’s parents and brothers were met by the mayor of Barranquilla at the unveiling.

Her fans came out in droves to show their support, flooding the comment section of her Instagram carousel.

One wrote: “Wow!!! How exciting to be recognized in your land like this, great and simple woman. I would pay to see the other’s face watching this hahahah.”

Another said: “The greatest artist Latin America ever had… Proud of you.”

Someone else commented: “Wow!!!! It’s beautiful it totally looks like you! Your parents must be so proud!”

Another summed it up by writing: “ICONIC.”

The unveiling comes after Shakira was honoured in September at the MTV Video Music Awards with the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

She was the first South American artist to receive the accolade.
