Panaji: The department of
civil supplies
and
consumer affairs
has ordered a
probe
into the explosion of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder reported in hutments at Bambolim on Tuesday afternoon.
The department has also asked the
inspector
concerned to inquire into the incident at Vasco where a person died while three others were rendered unconscious after a reported
gas cylinder
leak at a rented premises on Sunday.
“We have issued directions to the inspectors to do field work and ascertain the causes, and find out if the LPG companies supplying cylinders were at fault,” a senior official said. He said the department will take “appropriate measures and action” based on the reports submitted by the inspectors.
The official said that the department has called a meeting of representatives of LPG companies on Friday.
“We want to know about the safety aspects and measures adopted by them and if they are creating required awareness among the public or not,” he added. The official said that instructions will be issued to LPG companies to prevent such incidents in the future.
He said that inspectors from the department inspect godowns of dealers whenever complaints are received from consumers.
“Our inspectors have limited powers. We can only inspect the dealer and not houses of consumers using domestic cooking gas. Consumers should get their gas stove, pipe and the regulator checked regularly,” he said.
