Grandson arrested for Alexandria murder

An Alexandria man allegedly stabbed his 77-year-old grandmother during an argument about food last weekend. South African Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the 36-year-old had been detained on a charge of murder.

Mawisa said it was alleged that on Friday evening November 10 the suspect, his stepmother and his father were drinking together at their house in Kwanonqubela.

“At some point, the 36 year old suspect cooked food and everyone in the house ate, including his 77-year-old grandmother,” Mawisa said.

Around 1am on Saturday November 11, the grandmother had gone to her grandson’s shack at the back of the house demanding food.  It was alleged that an argument broke out and she was stabbed several times with a screwdriver.

Her body was discovered by her husband on Monday, November 13.

“The suspect was arrested later in the day (November 13) in the Alexandria CBD,” Mawisa said.

He had been detained on a charge of murder and would appear in the Alexandria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, November 15.

Talk of the Town will publish the victim’s name after the suspect has pleaded, to avoid identifying the suspect before then.
