Hallgrimsson urges strong start for Reggae Boyz in World Cup qualifier

Head coach of Jamaica’s national senior men’s football team, Heimir Hallgrimsson has emphasized the critical need for the Reggae Boyz to begin their Concacaf World Cup qualifying campaign on a strong note.

The Reggae Boyz are set host the Dominican Republic today at the National Stadium in the second round of Group E qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match will kick off at 3:30 p.m., following a rescheduling from 5:30 p.m. by Concacaf due to inadequate lighting.

Hallgrimsson expressed a preference for the later kickoff but remains focused on securing a victory despite the timing issue.

“The time change will certainly impact our play, but it’s unfortunate that fans might not be able to attend due to work commitments. However, our primary objective is to win this game,” Hallgrimsson stated.

The Icelandic coach warned against underestimating the Dominican Republic, highlighting their tactical proficiency and young talent.

“Many believe it will be an easy game for us, but I assure you it won’t be. The Dominican Republic is a tactical and rapidly improving team with promising players. They have been recruiting high-caliber players from Spain and England, so I anticipate a challenging match,” he explained.

Jamaica will be missing several key players—Demarai Gray, Amari’i Bell, Joel Latibeaudiere, Ethan Pinnock, Andre Blake, and Dujuan Richards—due to injuries, while Leon Bailey remains unavailable. Despite these absences, Hallgrimsson is confident in his squad’s capability, including 17-year-old Adrian Reid Jr.

The attacking responsibilities will primarily lie with West Ham United’s Michail Antonio and Clermont’s Shamar Nicholson. Hallgrimsson expressed confidence in their ability to perform well.

“Both Antonio and Nicholson have consistently delivered for Jamaica, regardless of their club form. Shamar, in particular, has played some fantastic games for us. We’re pleased to see Michail returning, improving, and getting sharper with each game. Having both of them is a great asset,” Hallgrimsson remarked.

Regarding Reid Jr., Hallgrimsson hinted at the possibility of the teenager earning his first senior international cap, given the absence of right-back Dexter Lembikisa and midfielder Kasey Palmer due to card suspensions.

“For young players like Adrian, it’s an opportunity to measure themselves. He’s versatile, capable of playing right back or in the middle. It’s beneficial for me to observe him during this camp,” Hallgrimsson noted. “For others, it’s a chance to step up, demonstrate their abilities, and enhance the depth in their positions. Jamaica has many wingers and strikers but lacks high-level midfielders, particularly defensive ones,” he added.

Regardless of the starting lineup, Hallgrimsson affirmed the team’s objective.

“We aim to start the game on the front foot, establish tempo, and fully utilize our strengths. While I won’t divulge our tactical plans, we intend to apply pressure from the beginning,” he concluded.
