Hazel Irvine, a well-known BBC sports presenter, has opened up about her journey in the world of sports broadcasting, a field that has been traditionally male-dominated. Starting her career back in 1987, she made history by becoming the first woman in the UK to fully anchor a dedicated football program.
In an interview, Hazel shared some of the challenges she faced when she first entered this male-oriented environment. She recalled being the only woman at many press conferences, which made her feel like a ‘curiosity’.
She stated, “I was the first woman in Great Britain to fully anchor a dedicated program, and that brought its challenges. No one said no to being interviewed by me, but they were very interested to see what I brought to the party.”
Hazel emphasized the importance of preparation and knowledge, saying she had to phrase her questions carefully to ensure she was taken seriously. “I had to make sure that in the phrasing of my questions, they realized that I’d done my homework beforehand,” she mentioned.
Over the years, she has become a respected presenter across various sports, including golf and snooker. She’s currently gearing up to host the Paris 2024 Olympics, which marks the fifth time she’s taken on this prestigious role.
Born in St Andrews, Scotland, Hazel studied History of Art and has always been passionate about sports. As a child, she spent her pocket money on stickers for an Olympics sticker book and was actively involved in sports during her school years.
Hazel’s television career took off in 1988 when she began guest hosting major events like the Olympics and the World Cup. In 2008, she married her long-term partner in a small, private ceremony.
The couple welcomed their daughter the following year, and Hazel humorously shared her excitement about the new arrival during a charity event. Now living in London, Hazel continues to lead an active lifestyle while maintaining her low profile regarding personal matters.
