However, the 20-year-old from Ngaremara Isiolo is now at the helm of a family where both parents died, leaving her as the sole breadwinner.
Elin’s mother died of throat cancer
The young woman’s heartbreaking story was brought to light through a video by PR and marketing enthusiast Happy Kulayo.

She disclosed that she was tossed into parenthood when they lost their mother to throat cancer weeks ago.
Elin was, therefore, left to take care of her younger sisters aged eight and five, both students at Ngaremara Primary School.
Her problems do not end there, the youngster was not only diagnosed with diabetes type 1 but also has pelvic problems.
“I was involved in a road accident along Kiambu Road and spent 11 months at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). I even sat my exams while there,” she said.
Wages are divided into food and medicine
To make ends meet, Elin has been forced to do menial jobs out of which she is able to make some little money for food.
As much as the wage is minimal, it has to be divided into food and insulin for herself, as well as drugs for her youngest sister who is asthmatic.
“When I am not doing peoples’ laundry, I work at construction sites and, to say the truth, things have been hard. We really need help, that’s all I can say,” she expressed.
This is against the backdrop of her not being able to walk or travel long distances, bend for long hours, engage in heavy chores, or get pregnant due to the pelvic issue.
Was pursuing Medicine at KU
Elin had to postpone her university education because of the burden of raising her sisters, but hopes to pick those broken pieces someday soon.
Reached for comment, she told TUKO.co.ke that she was initially meant to study Internal Relations at the University of Nairobi but her dream was in Medicine.
She, therefore joined Kenyatta University on the parallel programme courtesy of a scholarship that has educated her since childhood.
“The doctors advised that I take 2023 off to recover then go back to school because the course needs commitment and I need to finish my medication,” she noted.
Offered job by petrol station
She reiterated that as the only parent the little girls have, her biggest desire is to make their lives comfortable because they are too young.
As of the time of filing this story, a petrol station in Isiolo had offered her a job but she was yet to sign the contract.
“They already reached out and even sent people to come see us. I told them I’d gladly take the job because it would be easy for me to go there every morning and come back home,” she concluded.
