Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the Greater Sudbury area as a multi-day heat event continues.
The forecast calls for a high of 32 C today, with sunny conditions in the morning followed by a mix of sun and cloud and a 30-per-cent chance of showers in the afternoon, alongside a risk of thunderstorm.
But expect a humidex of 37, with a UV index of eight or very high. Not much relief is promised tonight with the overnight low expected to dip only to 18.
The warning covers the following areas:
Greater Sudbury and vicinity
Markstay-Warren, St. Charles
West-Nipissing, French River
Gogama, Foleyet
Chapleau, Missinaibi Lake
Espanola, Massey and Killarney
Manitoulin Island
The heat warning issued this morning forecasts high heat today and tomorrow. Extreme heat impacts everyone, but young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic conditions and people working or exercising outdoors are most at risk.
“Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions,” the warning states.
To protect yourself from heat, drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. The public is also encouraged to check on older family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are cool and drinking water. Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
