Here’s how Modi 3.0 oath-taking ceremony made headlines in western media

Story highlights

All the media channels emphasised the significant dependence of PM Modi on his allies for the first time since he became the country’s prime minister in 2014.

The Western media extensively covered the oath-taking ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he began his historic third term on Sunday (June 9). Along with Modi, 72 other ministers also took oath and are now waiting for portfolios to be assigned.

Among the ministers who took oath were some important leaders of the BJP’s coalition partners who played a crucial role in the government formation. For the first time, PM Modi will share power with his allies since he came to the helm in 2014.

Here’s how PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony was covered by foreign media

The New York Times

While reporting about the swearing-in ceremony of the Modi government, The New York Times stated that New Delhi’s political air had transformed. It wrote that PM Modi was denied a parliamentary majority and he had to turn to a set of coalition partners who took the spotlight yesterday.

BBC

BBC opted for an objective style of reporting in its coverage of Modi 3.0 and kept itself away from any analysis. However, it emphasised that the ruling alliance won by a lower margin in comparison to what was predicted by the exit polls which led to the “resurgence of India’s opposition.”

Al Jazeera

In its report, Al Jazeera said that the lack of a majority will be able to test the ability of the BJP to ensure certainty among allies over policies in a coalition government. It further added that the alliance may face challenges from the two coalition-era veterans, Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu who “have friends across the aisle” and “opposition will be wooing them”.

Bloomberg

Bloomberg spoke about the oath ceremony’s grandeur and added that it was attended by 8,000 guests which included foreign heads of states, business tycoons and Bollywood stars. The publication also emphasised Modi’s power sharing with allies for the first time.
