Tragedy struck at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, as several female students are feared dead in a stampede that occurred during the distribution of palliatives at the university’s convocation square on Friday.
Confirming the incident to journalists, the National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, Yunusa Baduku, described it as “horrible” and provided insights into the chaotic scene.
Baduku expressed, “Seriously, what happened this morning at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi is uncalled for, and very pathetic.”
He elaborated, stating, “After our arrangement for the distribution of palliatives to the students which was to hold at the University’s convocation square, they (students) suddenly arrived at the venue in their numbers and overpowered the security.”
Detailing the unfortunate turn of events, Baduku explained, “They broke through the gate into the Convocation square where the bags of rice were to be shared.”
He added, “Unfortunately, most of our female students sustained several degrees of injuries, while others got suffocated because of the population at the venue for the distribution of the palliatives.”
Providing updates on the casualties, Baduku disclosed, “Right now, I am at the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, where we brought some of our students for emergency treatment.”
He further stated, “Also, as National President of NASA, I got an official report that one student has died as a result of the unfortunate incident.”
Baduku commended the swift response of the school management, student leaders, and state government representatives in providing immediate medical assistance to the affected students.
Meanwhile, Afenifere, the apex Yoruba socio-political organization, urged President Bola Tinubu to address Nigeria’s economic challenges urgently, emphasizing the dire state of hunger in the country.
In a statement, Afenifere lamented Nigeria’s current status as the hunger capital of the world and called for decisive action against terrorists, particularly in northern Nigeria.
The organization decried the devaluation of the Nigerian naira and criticized the government’s failure to alleviate the suffering of the people, urging Tinubu to prioritize addressing these pressing issues.
