University of Bahr El Ghazal students in Wau recently staged street protests over the lack of food.

The company that has been supplying the institution stopped delivering food on April 24, citing the university’s failure to pay its money.
No food, no lectures
According to a post by Eagles Media on X, the university’s student leader, Maluak Mayom Gak, told the media that they would protest until the supply resumes.
The third-year student clarified that they don’t blame the supplier for failing to deliver food but the government.
Maluak reiterated that the lectures would not continue lessons since there were no students in the classes.
“The students you are seeing are demanding food. The government should pay the company immediately, or our protest will not stop,” he said.
Maluak’s sentiments were corroborated by Paska, a College of Public Health student who said they only needed food to leave the streets.
Protests disrupted activities at nearby market
Eyewitnesses noted that the strike led to the closure of the Jou market in Wau town when students trooped carrying placards and chanting.
“Students were seen blocking roads near the university and the market,” one of the sources said.
One Citizen Daily reports that the closure of the market caused disruption to businesses and to residents in the area.
Law enforcement officers were forced to deploy forces at the university and surroundings to ensure people’s and property’s safety.
