Trinidad and Tobago is in desperate need of more positive energy, says reggae star Isasha (Brendan Young).

“De place getting more out-of-timing, more disrespectful, the youths and dem doh have that proper guidance,” Isasha lamented, during a WhatsApp interview with the Express yesterday.

The La Horquetta-born singer believes positive music is the ointment to soothe the islands’ flare-up of violent crime. He plans to deliver the first dose on stage at an All White Affair at San Fernando Hill, San Fernando, tomorrow.

“I just trying to do something where I could put a nice energy in the atmosphere because of the state of the place right now. The country need it,” Isasha continued earnestly.

Research shows that music can have positive impacts on individuals and societies, Isasha continued.

“Crime is not only here is in the world. Music have a big part to do with it, because music is very influential. People listen music to calm they soul, to fuel they soul. People listen to music for religious reasons, too.”

Three musical medicines

The “Red, White & Black” singer warns that after being flooded with violent and misogynistic content, the island must now administer the right type of music with uplifting and edifying messages before the situation spirals further.

“I believe music have a big ting to do with the state of the country right now, because what yuh putting in is what yuh getting. The more violent music they keep playing, the more violent the place getting.

“My advice to the Trinibad artistes is try and push some more positive music. Not everything have to be about a number or a gang or killing people. I wouldn’t glorify music like that because I believe in messages and saving one or two instead of killing people,” he said.

Isasha is adamant his All White Affair has “the right messages”. The showcase will feature three segments of popular regional music: reggae, Trini-dancehall and soca.

The reggae segment will feature Orlando Octave, Prophet Benjamin (Devon Samuel), Jamelody (Michael Williams), Jalifa (Kalifa Alexis), King David (David Nieves), Kushite (Tanesha Stowe), Ziggy Ranking (Khori Francis), Black Loyalty (Keon Jones) and Mr King (Marvin Lewis).

The showcase’s Trini-dancehall segment will feature Jahllano (Llano Grant), Rheon Elbourne, Raskality (Diego Smith) and Jahz-Blaze (Jahzeel Christopher). And the soca segment features Nadia Batson, Mical Teja (Mical Williams), Lyrikal (Devon Martin), Preedy (Akeem Chance) and College Boy Jesse (Jesse Stewart).

“That’s why I do this concept. And the type of artistes on the concert is more positive artistes with a message. I believe we need more of it, not only from me but other artistes. We need to put more positive energies out there in the atmosphere so we could eradicate more of the chupidness going on in the country,” Isasha said.

One in a ‘Million’

Isasha also plans to pay special tribute to his late brother, reggae singer Million Voice (Kevin Young), during tomorrow night’s performance. Million sadly passed away on October 5, 2018, from kidney failure after a year of battling cancer.

“I have to do a tribute to him in my show. I believe anything I doing, once it coming to music I will always put my brother in it—if is to name a studio, a song,” Isasha said.

Isasha says above all else, he misses his brother’s calming influence. “Not a day goes by I don’t think about meh brother or miss him. Million was different. Certain things I mighta be frettin’ for, he never used to fret.

“He was more humble and I does miss him for just being that around meh. Sometimes I am the more rowdy one and just because he more humble and he is meh bigger brother, he would know how to humble me down, he will know how to bring me right down to zero,” Isasha related.

The “Don’t You Know” singer says the deep pain he still feels inside his chest five years after his brother’s passing is testament that “time does not heal all wounds”.

“I does still cry for meh brother. I does still miss him sometimes when I go to perform. Certain timing I does just break down. Million was…,” Isasha stuttered. “Million was my mentor, my best friend,” he continued.

“Is so much me and him did together, not only as brothers, but as artistes going out there to perform together. We see so many things together. We go through so many things together.

“Is like piece of me gone, but every time I hit a stage and perform I does feel his presence. Not only on a stage, but home and all. Sometimes I going through my personal lil stress, and I think of him and hear his voice.

“I doing a nice tribute to him and I want de people to come out and witness that,” Isasha concluded.
