The Home Secretary will set out to ease Rwandan concerns over delays to emergency laws to declare the country safe as a new treaty is worked on.
Rwanda is also said to be concerned about Britain having too much influence on Kigali’s legal system. But Security Minister Tom Tugendhat said Mr Cleverly, inset, should be able to achieve a diplomatic breakthrough.
He told Times Radio: “As Foreign Secretary he had a good working relationship with the Rwandan government.
“I’m sure he is extremely well placed to make sure any concerns Rwanda may have will be alleviated.” Under the scheme some asylum seekers will be sent to the African nation.
The Government sees it as key to deter small boat crossings of the Channel.
The Home Secretary has vowed the new treaty with the African state will be legally watertight.
Senior diplomats have privately told the Foreign Office Rwanda’s commitment to the scheme can’t be taken for granted. Sir Matthew Rycroft, Permanent Secretary at the Home Office, hinted more cash could be paid to Rwanda.
