George Osborne leaves church following wedding to Thea Rogers

George Osborne’s wedding was crashed today by what appears to be a Just Stop Oil protester throwing orange confetti over the newlyweds.

The protest group later joked on Twitter that the pair “looked good in orange” following a video of the moment the confused couple were doused in orange.

The 52-year-old ex-Chancellor of the Exchequer married his former Treasury adviser Thea Rogers in a ceremony in Bruton, Somerset, today.

They were surrounded by friends and Tory bigwigs including David Cameron and Michael Gove.

But the moment they emerged from the church after tying the knot was marred by a woman with grey hair who ran up behind the couple and threw orange confetti over them.

Both Thea and George could be seen nervously glancing at her as she approached, uncertain of her intentions.

It was originally unclear if the prank was related to eco-group Just Stop Oil (JSO) who earlier this week sprinkled the same confetti over Court 18 at Wimbledon, interrupting the match involving British number one Katie Boulter.

But JSO’s official Twitter account later shared the video and wrote: “You look good in orange George Osborne.”

“Congratulations to the newlyweds.”

They then shared a series of articles tying George Osborne to oil companies as well as a post from NASA which read: “Unofficial records suggest that in recent days the global average temperature was the warmest that has ever been directly measured.”

The woman, whose confetti had been kept in a Union Jack-marked bag, fled the scene when what appeared to be a security guard approached her.

Express.co.uk has contacted Just Stop Oil for comment.

The act of protests has garnered several unhappy responses. Several on social media said they had gone “too far” by trying to ruin their big day.

One said: “I generally support your actions, and I am no fan of George Osborne, but this is not on. You have overstepped the mark. Your actions today will have done your cause no good whatsoever.”

Another added: “Really shameful of you. If you think doing this will put the public on your side, then you couldn’t be more wrong.”
