Kaamya Karthikeyan, a 16-year-old mountaineer, achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the youngest ever Indian and the second youngest girl in the world to scale Mt Everest.
Kaamya was accompanied by her father, Commander S Karthikeyan of the Indian Navy, as she embarked on her journey to climb the world’s tallest peak.
They both reached the summit at 8848 metres on May 20.
The Indian Navy took to its official X handle and wrote a post congratulating the father-daughter duo.
“Kaamya Karthikeyan, a 16-year-old, class XII student of Navy Children School, Mumbai, and her father, Cdr S Karthikeyan of the Indian Navy successfully summited Mt. Everest (8849 M) on 20th May,” the Western Naval Command, Indian Navy, wrote on X.
“#IndianNavy congratulates Ms Kaamya Karthikeyan, daughter of Cdr S Karthikeyan, on becoming the youngest #Indian & the second youngest girl in the world to summit Mt Everest from the Nepal side. Kaamya has exhibited immense courage & fortitude in summiting the highest peaks in six of the seven continents. #IndianNavy wishes young Kaamya the very best in her aspiration to summit the highest peaks of all seven continents, becoming the youngest girl to do so,” the Indian Navy wrote on X.
Before scaling Mt Everest, Kaamya, in Feb 2020, became the youngest girl in the world to summit Mount Aconcagua, which is the highest peak in South America and outside of Asia.
She summited the 6,962-metre tall Argentinian mountain peak on February 1, 2020.
She has previously scaled the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, and Australia, including two peaks with heights of over 6000 meters above sea level.
Kaamya is also a recipient of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Shakti Puraskar, an award given to children for their outstanding achievements.
