KeNHA Warns Motorists Over Highway Fully Blocked by Landslide

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned motorists plying the Meru – Mikinduri – Maua Highway about a landslide that has made the road impassable.

In a notice released on Friday, road users were advised to exercise caution while plying the route.

Further, KeNHA urged the public to use alternative roads to and from Maua town.

“KeNHA is on site clearing the road section to restore traffic flow and ensure the safety of the motorists,” read part of the notice.

The incident comes barely a week after KeNHA issued a similar advisory to motorists on the Isiolo-Marsabit Highway.

Heavy rainfall in the Karare and Korr areas had caused flooding and reduced a section of the road to a single lane, requiring drivers to seek alternative routes.

Over the past weeks, several counties have experienced heavy rainfall, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of a potential El Nino rainfall across the country.

President William Ruto, however, dismissed the claims, insisting that the country would only experience average rainfall.

Following Ruto’s remarks, Kenya Met listed areas to be affected by heavy rainfall and storms, including the coast, north-western, north-eastern, and Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley.

Some included Murang’a, Tana River, Meru, Kitui, Tharaka Nithi, Kilifi, Lamu, Samburu, Marsabit, West Pokot, Kisii, Migori, Vihiga and Wajir.

Others include Garissa, Makueni, Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Trans Nzoia, Mandera, Bungoma, Kericho, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet.
