THE Juvenile Court in Kuwait has convicted Turki Ayed Al-Azmi, the killer of Filipina house helper Jullebee Ranara, sentencing him to 15 years in prison, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
Al-Azmi also meted one year imprisonment for driving without license, the DFA said, citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait.
“The lesser penalties were due to the accused being a minor. He has 30 days to appeal the judgement to the Court of First Instance,” the DFA said in a statement Thursday evening.
Ranara’s family has been informed about Al-Azmi’s conviction “and is grateful for the assistance provided [to] them by the government,” the Foreign Affairs department said.
The Philippine government “acknowledges the efforts undertaken by the Kuwaiti authorities to effect a speedy resolution of the case, in the pursuit of justice for our slain kababayan (fellowman),” it added.
