Despite the seasonably hot temperatures, anticipation grows as LaSalle’s newest wintertime amenity — an outdoor ice skating trail — takes shape along its waterfront.
Work is well underway on LaSalle’s $8.8-million multi-purpose trail project adjacent to the town’s event centre on Front Road.
The 60-acre LaSalle Landing riverfront property is being redeveloped into a multi-use community complex.

Current construction work underway includes a 250-metre trail, stretching between Adams Lane and Ulster Street.
The trail will offer a wheelchair-accessible concrete path for recreational walking, jogging and rollerblading during most of the year, with a natural ice surface for skating from December to February.
The plan also calls for the construction of an ice plant, a building that will house the refrigeration equipment for the skating trail and hardware for a water feature, as well as four public washrooms.
A former marina storage building has already been converted into an event space with adjacent parking.
The area adjacent to the Detroit River will also include a nature preserve, festival event lawn, play areas and gardens.
The Rotary Club of LaSalle has pledged $132,000 toward a splash pad that will be included in the riverfront development, featuring benches, ground-level water jets, and areas to relax and enjoy the water.

Concept drawings for the project also include a large, lit LaSalle sign suitable for selfies.
The sign’s letters would be approximately 2.4 metres (eight feet) tall on a 400-millimetre (16-inch) plinth, lit up with LED lights that change colour.
LaSalle councillors agreed in April 2023 to name the development LaSalle Landing.
“When I look at the word ‘landing’, it’s where we started, where we began,” said Mayor Crystal Meloche in a statement. “My hope is that the waterfront brings people in, to land in LaSalle.”
