The Windsor Lancers can only wonder what might have been.

A seven-point lead in the fourth quarter disappeared for the No. 9-ranked Lancers and a potential game-tying touchdown called back in the dying seconds of a 21-14 road loss to the No. 3-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA semifinal football action on Saturday.

“It was a really tough way to end the game and it will sting for a long time,” Lancers’ head coach J.P. Circelli said.

After falling behind 7-0 early, the Lancers rallied to pull within 7-6 at the half on two Brady Lidster field goals. A safety put the Lancers up 8-7 after three quarters and rookie quarterback Nick Dimoviski pushed the lead to seven with a nine-yard touchdown run three minutes in the fourth quarter.

“I think most people understand how hard it is to come back to (face Laurier) after losing 40-7 a few weeks ago with no one giving you a chance to be a play away from winning the game,” Circelli said in reference to Windsor’s loss to Laurier in Week 7.

Laurier capped an 87-yard drive to tie the game and took the lead with just under three minutes to play.

Dimovski drove the Lancers to the Laurier 22 and hit Weabge Mombo with a 22-yard touchdown with 21 seconds to play, but Windsor was called for holding to wipeout the score. Two Dimovski passes from the 32 went incomplete and the Golden Hawks kneeled out the clock.

“Even though we didn’t achieve the outcome we wanted, I am so proud of how the student-athletes continually responded,” Circelli said. “We have a special football program at the University of Windsor and I hope, after watching our efforts and season, but especially (Saturday), that our Windsor community can be proud of this group and the rest of the province looks at our program in a new light and sees it as a special place.”

Vipers top conference

The LaSalle Vipers remain atop the Western Conference in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League after 3-1 road win over the Komoka Kings on Saturday.

Nicholas Graniero and Ryan Clark each had a goal and an assist for the Vipers (11-4-1-0). Andrew Kotevski added an empty-net goal and Owen Pitters picked up a pair of assists against the eighth-place Kings (2-16-0-0).

Lancer basketball splits

The Windsor Lancers women’s basketball team made it back-to-back wins to open the OUA season with a home-opening 79-61 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday. The men trailed early and could not recover in a 76-65 loss to Laurier.

Kali Grootenboer led the Lancers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Maggie Denys finished with 13 points and Reine Ndome added 12 points.

The men’s team fell behind by 19 points after the opening quarter and could not never erase the gap.

Xavier Ochu had 16 points to lead the Lancers with Ziphion Grant added 14 points and Quinn Carey chipping in with 10 points.

Lancer hockey swept

The Windsor Lancers men’s hockey team has lost three games in a row after Saturday’s 4-2 road loss to the Guelph Gryphons while the women’s team dropped back-to-back games to the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA action.

For the men, Will Ennis and Jake Durham twice pulled the Lancers (4-4-1-0) into a tie, but the Gryphons (5-4-0-0) closed with the game’s final two goals.

The women’s team was blanked by the West Division-leading Golden Hawks (6-1-0-0) on Saturday after the Lancers (3-4-0-1) had lost 5-3 to Laurier on Friday.
