CEBU CITY — Central Luzon long jumper Jyane Kurt Cantor and Central Visayas long-distance runner Asia Paraase posted dominant wins at the official start of the 64th Palarong Pambansa at the Cebu City Sports Center track oval on Thursday.

Cantor posted a new Palarong Pambansa long jump elementary boys record as he leaped a distance of 6.14m to seize the gold medal.

A converted athlete from triple jump, Cantor topped the previous standard of 6.04m established by Jeremie Tamles of Davao Region in the 2002 Palaro edition in Naga.

“I never expected this (winning a gold medal),” said Cantor, a sixth grade student from Caanawan Elementary School in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija.

Khrispher Kyle Ngirngir of Region 6 (Western Visayas) finished second to Cantor and claimed the silver medal with a 5.63m leap.

Ace Francis Bacongallo of Region 7 (Central Visayas) covered a distance of 5.59m to settle for the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Paraase reigned supreme at the girls secondary 3000m run as she defeated the other podium finishers by a huge time difference to also claim the first gold medal of this year’s Palaro.

The 17-year-old Paraase submitted a time of 10:27.36, besting Chrishia Mae Tajarros and Mary Jane Pagayon who claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Tajarros of Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) clocked 10:39.72 while Pagayon of Region 11 (Davao Region) covered the distance in 10:52.72

An incoming Grade 12 student at Pajo National High School in Lapu-Lapu City, Paraase said she’s carrying on the dream of her mom Sarah Mae Abucay-Paraase, who used to be a national team sprinter.

“I was already running since Grade 6, I was influenced by my mom,” said Paraase who was named after the Asian Games, the 2006 Asian Games in Doha to be exact.

Abucay-Paraase had to withdraw because she was pregnant with Asia.

“My mom was preparing for the Asian Games but she became pregnant with me so [she withdrew from participating] and just named me after the tournament,” Paraase said.

In the other athletic events, Ariana Dawn Rabi of Region 1 (Ilocos Region) ruled the elementary girls discus throw as she submitted 31.21m.

Sam Bantillo, meanwhile, topped the boys secondary long jump with a leap of 7.09m.

Swimming, a sport also holding its medal games on the first day, was taking place at press time.
