Longtime Saskatoon city councillor Mairin Loewen has announced she will not seek re-election in Ward 7 this November.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Loewen said she and her family decided in 2020 that this would be her last term in office.
Pointing to “a new era” of activities and commitments for her family, she said “it’s increasingly challenging to strike the right balance and fit with the demands and expectations of Council work.”

Loewen thanked her friends, family and community for their support, and praised the commitment of her council colleagues and the expert advice provided by city staff during her time in office.
Noting highlights from her council career including the construction of three bridges, securing funding for a new bus-rapid transit system and the opening of the Remai Modern Art Gallery, Loewen said “there is always more to be done, and some work left unfinished,” while adding she is “confident the next Council will meet these challenges and continue to build a bright future for our City.”
Loewen is the latest incumbent council member to announce a decision not to return for the 2024 municipal vote.
She joins Mayor Charlie Clark, who is departing municipal politics after an 18-year career that began as a councillor.
Ward 2 Coun. Hilary Gough, Ward 8 Coun. Sarina Gersher and Ward 3 Coun. David Kirton have also said they will not seek re-election.
Voters in Ward 6 will also pick a new councillor, as incumbent Cynthia Block is running for mayor.
Saskatoon voters go to the polls on Nov. 13.
