A massive fire broke out at Acropolis Mall in Kolkata on Friday (June 14). Several people were feared trapped inside the mall.

Fire engines rushed to the mall to douse the fire.

As per the initial reports, the fire broke out on the third floor of Acropolis shopping mall located in the southern part of Kolkata, prompting authorities to evacuate the building.

“Firefighters, equipped with oxygen masks, are battling the blaze. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far, the firefighting operation is still underway,” an official told PTI.

A senior officer of the Kolkata Traffic Police said, “The entire area was engulfed in smoke, traffic around the mall is being regulated to ensure emergency vehicles have access.”

Few days back fire broke out at the restaurant nearby a multi-storied building on Park Street. Thick smoke and flames were seen from the higher floors of the structure, a part of which was covered with tin sheets that got destroyed.

Residents from nearby buildings and workers from offices rushed out onto the street in fear.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, and they are still working as the cooling-off process is underway, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose said.

The cause of the fire will be determined after a forensic investigation, he said, adding that authorities will also check if the restaurant owner complied with safety regulations.
