Manchester High will enter today’s second day of the ISSA/GK Insurance Grace Headley Cup final against May Day High in pole position, after yesterday’s first day on their home turf in Manchester.
Manchester posted a competitive 219 runs as Pajay Nelson top scored with 67, accompanied by Matthew and Rhevon Morgan, who chipped in with 46 and 40, respectively.
May Day’s spinner Chadwick Hewitt found success early in the day under favourable conditions as he helped himself to five wickets while conceding 49 runs with Nashane Meade collecting two for 46.
Sent in to bat later in the late afternoon, having to face the last 33 overs, May Day reached 118 for nine, as they felt the wrath of seamer Rhevon Morgan, who after a spell of nine overs, took four wickets for 17 runs, which included five maidens.
May Day’s innings was mainly constructed by a well played knock of 55 by Chadwick Hewitt as Javed Williams, the competition’s leading run scorer, mustered 10 runs.
Barry Barnes, head coach of Manchester, was still calm in his demeanour as he believed the game was far from over.
“There’s a lot of cricket left to be played as this is a two innings game, however, we have a slight upper hand now, but there’s a lot of cricket to be played,” Barnes said.
