Mary Trump Slams Katie Britt

Mary Trump has criticized Alabama Senator Katie Britt after she delivered the Republican Party’s response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union (SOTU) address on Thursday.

During her response to Biden, Britt—the youngest Republican woman ever elected to the Senate—attacked the president on his economic and border policies and called him a “dithering and diminished leader.”

At times, Britt appeared to be on the verge of tears, while other times she painted a picture of Americans struggling under Biden’s presidency. Britt said: “The American dream has turned into a nightmare for so many families.”

Trump, who is the niece of former President Donald Trump, wasn’t impressed and took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her thoughts. “Here’s the good news—this will be over soon,” Trump posted while watching the Republican Party’s response.

Newsweek emailed a spokesperson for Trump and contacted Britt via her website for comment Friday.

People took to the comments to criticize Britt’s delivery as well, with one person writing: “Not soon enough! Make it stop!!!”

“‘We see you’ oh no, please don’t see me, Katie. You’re scaring the hell out of me,” posted another, while a third added: “This is very sad. This is her first time, she’s a new young senator. She’s trying too hard. Cringe worthy.”

Trump wasn’t done, as she posted her thoughts again, writing: “Nothing quite like powerful-woman misogyny.”

People also took to the comments of this post to share their thoughts, with many saying Britt’s delivery was reminiscent of The Handmaid’s Tale, a television show based on the novel by Margaret Atwood. The book centers on a dystopian society where women are treated cruelly and shows what life is like for people who have to live in a totalitarian state.

“She was really overacting in her audition for an establishment role on Handmaid’s Tale,” one person posted.

Others felt like Britt was overacting in a way that was almost humorous and compared her rebuttal to a Saturday Night Live sketch.

“That rebuttal felt like a SNL parody of the GOP rebuttal to the SOTU,” another X user wrote.

Trump isn’t the only person with an opinion on Britt’s address. The speech even received criticism from prominent conservatives. Michael Steele, former chair of the Republican National Committee, posted on X: “Well, that Katie Britt experience was … experiential.”

Allie Beth Stuckey, a popular conservative podcaster, approved of Britt as the choice for giving the rebuttal but did not think she performed well.

“Katie Britt is exactly the right pick for the response, but this is hard to watch. She’s acting instead of just speaking,” Stuckey wrote on X.

Stuckey’s opinion of the speech softened in later messages, though, and she followed up by writing that in “Britt’s defense, this kind of speech is very hard to do for people who aren’t used to doing it.”

Britt was first elected in 2022 and, with Donald Trump’s endorsement, she succeeded retiring Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, for whom she previously served as chief of staff.
