The St. Louis Cardinals are having a dreadfully disappointing season, sitting in last place in the mediocre NL Central.
On Wednesday night, the Cardinals hit a new low, pulling off a particularly ugly way to blow a ballgame and providing an unexpected conclusion to a wild game in Miami.
Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Marlins had one out and runners on first and second base when Marlins shortstop Joey Wendle chopped a comebacker to Cardinals pitcher Jordan Hicks. What should have been an easy toss to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt for the second out turned into a disaster for the Cardinals. Hicks overthrew Goldschmidt and the ball rolled into foul territory in right field as Garrett Hampson and Yuli Gurriel raced around the bases, scoring the tying and winning runs, respectively, in a crazy 10-9 victory.
“You don’t expect to win one like that,” Wendle said, “but I think with the fight that we have and the way that we continue to fight hard … it’s been fun.”

Miserable series for Cardinals in Miami
The Marlins ― who throttled the Cardinals for a 15-2 win on the Fourth of July ― stormed out to a five-run lead after two innings only to allow St. Louis to even up the score in the top of the third. After the Marlins added another run in the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals evened up the score again in the fourth. After the Marlins took an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cardinals trimmed the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. St. Louis scored twice in the top of the ninth to take the 9-8 lead into the bottom of the frame.
The Marlins ― who own the National League’s second-best record ― go for a four-game series sweep of the Cardinals on Thursday.
