Monsoon rains expected in parts of Luzon – Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — Moderate to heavy rains are expected over the Ilocos Region and Zambales because of a southwesterly wind flow or the southwest monsoon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The weather bureau on Thursday said in its 11 a.m. advisory that these areas will be expecting rains of 50 to 100 millimeters.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” it wrote.

Pagasa’s 4 a.m. weather bulletin on Thursday also indicated that the Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms because of the southwest monsoon, while the Batanes and Babuyan Islands will also experience the same conditions, due to the frontal system.

By the definition of the weather bureau, the southwest monsoon consists of “warm moist winds from the southwest causing rains over the western portion of the country from May to September”, while a frontal system is defined as “a combination of weather conditions in which one or more weather fronts can be recognized.”

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated or localized thunderstorms or rain showers.

The temperature for the country ranges from 26.5 to 32.5 degrees Celsius, while relative humidity ranges from 63 to 98 percent.
