A motorist has died in an horrific single-vehicle road traffic crash on the outskirts of Cork city this morning.
A car went out of control on the outbound lane of the N8 Lower Glanmire Road at Tivoli at around 7am, struck a wall and burst into flames.
Three units of the Cork City Fire Brigade from Anglesea St and Ballyvolane rushed to the scene but the motorist was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the car.
Gardaí were working earlier to identify the victim and to trace and inform family members.
While the incident occurred on the outbound lanes, gardaí have closed both the outbound and inbound lanes of the N8 in this area to facilitate the emergency services as they deal with the incident, and to facilitate a forensic investigation of the scene.
“Inbound traffic is being diverted from the Dunkettle Roundabout via the Jack Lynch Tunnel and Glanmire while outbound traffic is being diverted from Silversprings via the North Ring Road,” a garda spokesman said.
The closure and diversions are likely to be in place for some time today and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
Gardaí have also issued an appeal for witnesses to the crash.
Any road users who may have camera footage. including dashcam, and were travelling on the Lower Glanmire Road between 6:30am and 7am have been asked to make this footage available.
