Venturing into politics to make impact
Mercy Jelagat contested for the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in the previous election in Kaptumo Kaboi ward.

“I was a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aspirant seeking an MCA seat, but unfortunately, I lost. I campaigned despite my physical disability because I love politics and hoped to make an impact,” the 26-year-old told TUKO.co.ke.
Learning to survive with paralysed legs
Jelagat was involved in a terrible road accident in 2018 on her way to Kisii county to work as a plant operator.
She broke her spine, which paralysed her from the chest downwards, forcing her to use a wheelchair for mobility.
“Doctors told me there was nothing they could do to correct my spine. I had to accept the heartbreaking news and swallow the bitter pill. I went to a rehabilitation centre for three months, where I was taught to survive with my physical disability,” she explained.
Single mum struggles to fend for infant
The woman from Nandi returned home to try and hustle for a source of income after completing a computer course, but life was not easy.
Jelagat, a single mum, said she struggled to care for herself and her seven-month-old baby without a source of income and with her physical disability state.
“I can’t control my bowel movements and bladder; hence I am using adult diapers. I am diabetic, and everything is getting out of hand,” she said.
Physically challenged Nandi woman seeks job
In a similar story, a 25-year-old physically challenged woman pleaded for a wheelchair and a job to sustain herself. Minclet Kanaga was looking for a job to support her hopeless mum.
The family struggled to make ends meet and afford adult diapers, which she used daily as she couldn’t control her urine.
Kanaga also required a better wheelchair to aid her mobility since the other was severely worn out.
