Nearly ten years later…murder charges in killing of couple

ALMOST ten years after an elderly Cedros couple was brutally murdered in their home, a neighbour who is already in prison on another murder charge has been charged with the crime.

Yunus Ali, 28, was charged on Tuesday with the murders of Krishna Ramdeen, 63, and his wife, Indra, 57.

Ali, also called “Son Son”, lived next door to the Ramdeens in Fullerton Village. A senior homicide detective told the Express on Wednesday that Ali was charged via a warrant, as he is currently in prison where he is remanded on another murder case for which he was charged in July this year.

The victim in that case is Tevin Francois, whose body was found with multiple chop wounds, on June 28, on McKenzie Road, Heritage Field Road, in Point Fortin.

Police said Ali spoke about the double homicide of the Ramdeens while on remand, and detectives of the Homicide Bureau of Region Three were finally able to bring answers to the Cedros family who have been appealing for justice on the 2014 case.

On Tuesday, homicide detectives were given the green light by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to lay the charges against Ali.

On December 4, after Ali reappears in the Point Fortin Magistrates’ Court for the Francois murder hearing, the charges regarding the murders of the Ramdeen couple will also be read to him.

The elderly couple was killed in a cutlass attack during a home invasion and robbery in January 2014.

The couple was killed for $30,000 and some pieces of Indra’s gold jewelry saved from running their small business—a bar adjoining their home.

The cash was intended to be spent to install iron bars on the bedroom window through which the killer/s entered that night.

The jewelry was Indra’s legacy to her grandchildren.

Police had said the killer entered through a window in the bedroom which did not have burglarproofing, which was occupied by an ailing and bed-ridden Krishna.

The elderly father died as a result of haemorrhaging due to a chop wound to the head.

Indra also suffered multiple chop injuries, but she died after she was strangled with a cord. A plastic bag was also placed over her head.

The attack occurred shortly after dusk, when Indra heard the commotion as she was about to have her dinner and medication (they were found the next morning, untouched).

Police believe she ran into the room and confronted the killer/s and was chopped, and as she raised her hands to defend herself, her limbs were almost severed.

She tried to flee, and her bloody footprints showed that she lost the battle in the living room.

As she collapsed, her killer/s tried to end her life and slashed her from head to chin, across her face, then placed a plastic bag and a plastic cord and wrapped it around her head.

The Ramdeens were found dead the next morning by their daughter, Ranee Ramdeen.
