The mayor of the Umhlathuze local municipality, Xolani Ngwezi, said he wished he could have done more to quell the tensions that led to the deadly shooting between IFP bodyguards this week.

“We had that incident, which was very unfortunate – and I want to say, on behalf of all the citizens of Umhlathuze, that we are very sorry. I am very sorry. I think that I should have done more than what I did in trying to resolve the situation,” he said.

News24 reported that KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating the killing of two bodyguards inside the municipality building on Thursday.

“Police have opened a murder case following a shooting incident at the Umhlathuze municipal offices in Richards Bay on Thursday morning,” said police spokesperson Colonel Richard Netshiunda on Saturday.
