Counsel for prosecutor advocate Billy Downer has slammed former president Jacob Zuma’s invalidated bid to privately prosecute his corruption prosecutor as a public joke that had “compromised public confidence in the administration of justice”.
“Mr Zuma can’t seriously be expected to get Mr Downer prosecuted and convicted, because there’s no case against him,” advocate Geoff Budlender SC told the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on Thursday.
“There’s no prospect of a conviction, everyone knows that and so a conviction cannot be the true purpose.”
