The floods in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend have increased the number of eThekwini residents held in temporary accommodation, with a housing backlog going back years.

Temporary accommodation refers to community halls, transit camps and sites where disaster victims were moved to, while the government sought to build them permanent houses.

The floods, which peaked on Saturday, claimed at least six lives in eThekwini, while two other people are missing after their shack was washed away in Tongaat.
