Former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, ruled out a coalition with the ANC, as the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is poised to be a kingmaker in KwaZulu-Natal.
Speaking to journalists at the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) national results centre, Zuma said her father, the leader of the MK Party, had indicated he was open to working with “progressive black parties”.
She said it did not include the ANC, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Asked whether the MK Party would work with the EFF, she said it was a “possibility”.
Zuma-Sambudla was non-committal on whether the MK Party would work with the IFP, likely to also be a strong contender in the province.
“The IFP… we will see,” she said.
The IFP has signed a pre-election pact and is part of the Multi-Party Charter (MPC).
The MPC includes the DA and a host of smaller political parties, such as ActionSA and the FF+.
FIRST TAKE | Did Jacob Zuma just kill the ANC?
The DA and the IFP already work together in a number of municipalities in KZN.
Zuma-Sambudla said the MK Party was not surprised at its impressive electoral performance, just six months after her father announced he would be fronting it.
“It’s something we have been working toward. We are not shocked.”
Former president Zuma is likely to take the final decision on any MK Party tie-ups.
He is set to visit the IEC results centre in the next two days.
News24 projections indicate the ANC is likely to lose its majority in KZN and it may even be supplanted as the largest party.
This is likely to have far-reaching consequences for the party nationally, as projections indicate the ANC has lost support across the nine provinces.
