A $1.3 billion (R24.6 billion) fund launched by Climate Fund Managers (CFM) and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) is aiming to increase transmission networks within the southern African region, including South Africa.
The money will provide capital for projects to improve cross-border connections between countries to distribute electricity from renewable energy and address energy blockages where transmission infrastructure have been under-funded.
Speaking at the launch on Tuesday, SAPP executive director Stephen Dihwa said the fund aims to ensure electricity is supplied to all people within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region in a “sustainable manner”.
