Three months after the deadly fire in a hijacked building in Johannesburg’s inner city, shocking details have emerged about the challenges faced by emergency services as they tried to rescue trapped residents.

The commission of inquiry into the blaze that killed 77 people at the Usindiso Building in Marshalltown began its work on Thursday, chaired by Justice Sisi Khampepe, with Advocate Thulani Makhubela and Vuyelwa Mabena making up the team. The blaze killed 77 people when the building caught fire in the early hours.
