NIA arrests Hizb-ut-Tahrir members, seizes extremist materials in Tamil Nadu raids

Story highlights

“NIA investigations revealed that they were involved in conducting secret classes to radicalise youth into extremist ideologies, propagating anti-democratic sentiments against the Indian Constitution, law, and judiciary,” the statement said.

Two people associated with the global pan-Islamist and fundamentalist organisation Hizb-ut-Tahrir were taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday (June 30).

The two men who have been detained are Abdul Rehman, also known as Abdul Rahman, and Mujibur Rehman, also known as Mujibur Rahman Altham Sahib.

They are both from Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district. The NIA conducted extensive searches at 10 locations across five districts of Tamil Nadu before making the arrests.

The Hizb-ut-Tahrir is dedicated to restoring the Islamic caliphate and carrying out the constitution that its founder, Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani, drafted, according to a statement released by the NIA.

“NIA investigations revealed that they were involved in conducting secret classes to radicalise youth into extremist ideologies, propagating anti-democratic sentiments against the Indian Constitution, law, and judiciary,” the statement said.

“Today’s searches led to the seizure of digital devices (mobile phones, laptops, SIM cards and memory cards) and several incriminating documents, including books and printouts containing the ideology of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Khilafa, Islamic State and proposed Khilafa government and its funding structures etc.,” it added.

The NIA statement revealed that the organisation brainwashed the trainees by making them believe that India is presently “Darul Kufr,” or the country of unbelievers, and that it is their religious obligation to convert it into “Darul Islam” by estabilishing an Islamic State through jihad.

Mobile phones, laptops, SIM cards, memory cards, and other digital devices were confiscated by the NIA during the searches. They also found books and printouts that included ideaology of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, the Khilafa (caliphate), the structures of the Islamic State, and its funders.
