FOR the first time, the National University (NU) ruled the UAAP women’s and men’s volleyball tournaments.
The Lady Bulldogs and the Bulldogs pulled off the historic feat after sweeping the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses and Golden Spikers in their respective Season 86 best-of-three Finals series at the Mall of Asia Arena on May 15.
On the women’s side, NU showed immense resiliency as it subdued a tough-fighting UST side in Game 2, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25, 25-16, with the turning point of the match being the extended third frame.
The Lady Bulldogs trailed the Golden Tigresses for practically the whole set and were staring at a 21-23 deficit before 22,515 fans at the venue.
UST still led at 24-23, but two-time MVP Bella Belen came through with three straight points before Sheena Toring punched in a block kill for a 4-1 finishing kick that clinched NU the set.

Surviving the thrilling third set dug the Lady Bulldogs a well of confidence as they took control of the fourth set, with Belen, Best Opposite Spiker Alyssa Solomon, and Vangie Alinsug taking turns on the offensive end.
Sheena Toring then released a quick attack for the championship-clinching point against the UST side, whose main gunner and Rookie of the Year Angge Poyos played in limited minutes after suffering an ankle injury in Game 1.
NU thus became the first school to pull off a double crown in UAAP indoor volleyball tournaments since Ateneo de Manila in Season 77 in 2015.
Solomon, who was judged MVP, provided the firepower for NU as she pumped 27 points on 20 attacks, four blocks, and three aces laced with six digs, while Belen did it on both ends as usual with her 19 markers, 11 digs and nine receptions.
Alinsug notched 13 points while Toring put up 10.
Xyza Gula banged 15 points, 11 receptions and 10 digs as two-time Best Libero racked up 15 digs and 18 receptions.
While the Lady Bulldogs had to earn every set against the Tigresses, their men’s counterpart had smoother sailing against the Golden Spikers, especially in the third set also in Game Two earlier, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, to complete their four-peat.
Second Best Outside Spiker Nico Almendras uncorked a through-the-block hit to clinch it for NU, which repeated over UST in the Big Dance to become the second team in the Final Four era to win four straight crowns.
Almendras racked up 15 points laced with 17 excellent receptions and six digs, while Michaelo Buddin fired 27 points and six receptions.
Two-time Best Setter and back-to-back Finals MVP Joshua Retamar dished out 24 excellent sets as Leo Aringo banged 18 markers.
Two-time MVP Josh Ybañez did all he could to keep UST alive, unleashing 24 points, 14 receptions and seven digs for the Golden Spikers, who were the first No. 4 seed team to make the Finals, defeating the top seed and twice-to-beat FEU Tamaraws in the Final Four.
