In a ceremony June 22, Const. B.J. Wiley was recognized for his successful rescue of a man from a burning vehicle.
Const. Wiley was off-duty when he was travelling with his family along a remote stretch of highway on June 12, 2021, when he saw a vehicle on fire, police said in a statement.
The elderly driver of the vehicle appeared panicked and unable to exit the vehicle.
Wiley approached the vehicle, noticing that the doors were locked, the windows partially down and the driver was tangled in his seatbelt.
“Racing against time, Const. Wiley began to remove the man through the partially opened window,” police said.
“As he was being pulled out, the driver’s foot caught the interior of the door, which opened the door. As his family watched, Wiley dragged the man to safety before the vehicle exploded.”
