Officials on Thursday said they would fix power supply problems that have affected some vendors who signed up for the government’s Night Vibes campaign, and also relented somewhat on an order for them to suspend business for much of National Day.
Some stalls at the night carnival at the Wan Chai Harbourfront complained of difficulties because there simply wasn’t enough power for their operations.
“Only the fridge is working… It affects me a lot, I cannot [sell] anything. It’s a little bit disappointing,” a food seller from Poland told RTHK.
The Development Bureau – which is an organiser of the carnival which opened on Wednesday – said it had been working to fix the electricity issue. It said it aimed to ensure a sufficient power supply by 6pm on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the bureau said it would ease a requirement for the vendors to shut up shop early on National Day.
The stallholders were earlier told to close by 4pm on Sunday – five hours before the fireworks show – due to crowd control arrangements.
After complaints, officials said police have further evaluated the situation and the stalls can stay open until 5pm and then reopen from 10.30pm.
A vendor surnamed Ching told RTHK he’d have to think about whether it would be worth it.
“I still have to pay my workers for the few hours when I can’t do business. And until when I can operate after re-opening at 10:30pm? I have to pay my staff for any overtime work. So the cost will become much higher,” he said.
