The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) says it has secured more than $69 million for consumers through its direct intervention and as a result of Guaranteed Standards breaches by utility companies.
It says the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited paid out more than $66 million for breaches while the National Water Commission paid $1.67 million.
The OUR says more than $1 million was secured between October last year and March this year from the resolution of complaints and appeals received by its Consumer Affairs Unit.
It says the NWC reversed charges totalling 56 per cent of the amount which related to some customers being billed for no service over an extended period.
JPS accounted for 44 per cent, which mainly represented refunds to several affected customers for sending consecutive estimated bills over an extended period while telecommunications provider FLOW accounted for less than one per cent of the total amount.
