Five secondary schools in South Trinidad have been adopted by Paria Fuel Trading Company Limited (Paria) as part of its Silver Sponsorship for Season 3 of the Carbon Zero Institute of Trinidad and Tobago (CZITT) National Secondary Schools Climate Quiz.
The schools are the Gasparillo Secondary School, Pleasantville Secondary School, Marabella North Secondary School, Marabella South Secondary School, and the San Fernando Central Secondary School.
In a release on Tuesday, Paria said it is pleased to continue its support, and believes that good health, safety and environmental performance are key to ensuring a sustainable business and must be considered in all decisions and undertakings of the company’s business.
“We are implementing a systematic and educational approach to environmental management by establishing sustainable programmes that will help to reduce the impact on climate change,” Paria said.
On November 6, Paria, in partnership with CZITT, held a one-day interactive workshop for the five schools to encourage participation in Season 3 of the CZITT National Secondary Schools Quiz.
In what was an interactive workshop, students were treated to healthy discussions on climate change from key representatives from NIHERST, EMA, COSTAATT, and the Ministry of Planning and Development, who provided their perspectives and knowledge on climate science, impacts and responses in relation to Trinidad and Tobago.
Paria’s sponsorship/adoption will run from November 2023 to May 2024. During this period, Paria employees will be volunteering to assist the respective schools in preparation for the Climate Quiz, as well as assisting in the development and implementation of a sustainable carbon reduction programme.
CZITT founder Donald Baldeosingh lauded the efforts of Paria for pioneering this initiative.
“This is the launch of a collaboration among CZITT, secondary schools and prominent corporations in which companies direct some of their ESG (Environmental Social and Governance) efforts to raising awareness among the next generation of leaders. The school is also influencing its community to reduce carbon emissions in the fight against climate change,” Baldeosingh said.
Paria said it is looking forward to fostering its relationship with its fence-line communities through the implementation of sustainable programmes.
