Passenger figures tipped to rise amid New Year rush

Passenger numbers across the country are projected to hit 1.56 million a day during the upcoming New Year holiday, an over five-fold increase year on year and 90 percent of the 2019 figure.

Visitor flows are expected to peak on Friday, Saturday, January 1 and January 2.

According to the National Immigration Administration, passenger figures at major airports nationwide are forecast to go up thanks to the resumption of flights and visa-free access granted to nationals from several European countries, among other factors.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport could see a daily average of 68,000 passengers, whereas the figure at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is projected to hit 34,000.

Land border crossings in Hong Kong and Macau are also expected to be busy, with passenger numbers reaching 93,000 daily at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. (Additional reporting by Xinhua)
